Has anyone ever tried Cardinal’s Housebreaking Aid to train their dog where to go?

I’m in the process of trying to house train my adopted dog. Generally, he’s pretty good but sometimes in the morning, he pees while we’re waiting for the elevator (I live in an apt building). I’ve tried getting up earlier and I’m always careful to clean up his mess with odor remover (so I don’t think its a matter of marking) — so I’m thinking of using this Cardinal Housebreaking Aid to train him to use a wee wee pad. Any suggestions? Thanks much!

I live in an apartment too, with 2 dogs. Because it’s not possible to take them out EVERY time they have to go, I have trained them to go on “puppy pads.”

I don’t use the flimsy, plastic puppy pads you buy especially for dogs, I use FULL-LENGTH CRIB LINERS (not the fitted sheet style with elastic) that you can buy from the baby section at Target (only $8.99).

They’re made of thick cotton (top and bottom) with vinyl lining in between. They’re completely waterproof so it doesn’t go through on your floor. I bought a few of them so I could replace them easily while the soiled ones are soaking in bleach water.

Basically, whenever you notice your dog has to go, walk him over to the pad. If he goes right away, treat him immediately. Just be consistent, treating him every time he goes on or near the pad. After about a week, he shouldn’t require treats anymore, it will just be a habit of his.
